We got engaged.

Flashing half way with my finger.

Simple little things I discovered while trying to take some close up pictures of a Technics model. There is a lot of white shiny plastic parts in the set, so it pretty much always washes out with the flash. Solution is to cover the bottom half of the flash with my finger. Had to use my cell phone to take a picture of my camera, but a picture really shows what I mean best.

So you can see, here are two shots using this trick. First without, then with. Definitely falls under the hack/kludge category, but good enough for what I needed.

It is not as if I don't have enough reasons to buy LEGOs already, but designing my own? Am so there.

While poking around looking for ideas to mess with my NXT, I happened across LEGO Digital Designer. I had heard of it before, but never really thought much of it. Not having much else I wanted to do, I downloaded it. Figuring that I would at least use up a couple hours trying to model some NXT sets. And so I played, and it was fun.

I should mention here that I also follow Brothers Brick, and the posts about mini-spaceships always caught my eye. This naturally came to mind while I was playing with LDD. So I gave a go at building some. Pretty easy in LDD. There had been a handful of warnings here and there about part selection that I was, up until this point, happily ignoring.

There is this little icon on the tool bar, of a brick and a globe and an arrow connecting the two. I was curious. I am really trying to imagine how I was supposed to say no when I got bounced to a web page asking if I would like to buy the set I just designed. I mean really. Design my own set and get the parts for it without having to scrounge them from other sets? Totally must do, totally.

So I did.

And here it is, unopened:

Then built:

Christmas 2007

Been busier than months before; I am finally having the time to write up a post. Bounced across two states so we could make it to both my and my girlfriend’s family’s Christmases. Lots of driving and sleeping in strange beds. Was great fun overall, but I am quite glad that it is over too.

I also picked up an EeePC, and am having some fun playing with that. Out of the box, its a nice machine. Even so, I got it primarily to mess around with. So I’ve got plans of rebuilding the OS. At the moment, I’m trying to decide if I want to base things off of Gobo or Puppy. Gobo gives a feeling of much more flexibility, but Puppy has a lot of the little configuration work done already. Ultimately, I’ll probably try out both, depending on free time and all.

Phantom Hourglass is the neatest DS game I’ve played so far. They really made fun use of the touch pad to control the game. Now that I’m done with that, I’m checking out why Metroid Prime 3: Corruption got the reviews it did. It is quite spiffy, I think.

Way up in the sky (hands thrown up)
The little birds fly (fly with your hands)
Way down in the nest (rock your arms, like holding a baby)
The little birds rest (rest head on hands, ‘sleeping’)

SHHH! (whispered) They’re SLEEPING! (shouted as loud as you can)

The bright sun comes up (make a loop over your head with arms)
The dew falls away (falling dew with hands)
Good morning, good morning (throw up hands at each ‘good morning’)
The little birds say

Evil Little Scratches

The pains of buying used I guess; evil little scratch. Just a tiny one, but its deep. The real bummer of it is, that the game played fine up almost the end. It dies right after the start of chapter five, and chapter six is the final bosses. sigh I even tried using brass polish. I know it helped, because that’s one damn shiny disc now. It used to have all sorts of little scuffs. Now its super shiny, with one small, deep scratch.

Musashi was fun too. But I guess I won’t be finishing this one. sigh well, I’ve whined, off to something else now.
